Event Brief

Global demand for energy is motivating oil and gas companies to venture into deepwater exploration and development. The deepwater environment, usually classified with water depth of over 400m, requires a more complex and advanced technology solutions, to overcome the practical issues that surround deepwater oil extraction.

The journey of deepwater exploration and development is a long and challenging one. The utmost concern of operators in deepwater venture is the huge capital expenditure required, resulting in high business risk exposure to uncertainties in deepwater projects.

Geological and geophysical (G&G) environment remains a challenge for all G&G personnel. Onshore seismic data interpretation itself is already a challenge to some G&G personnel. With more deepwater exploration and development in the pipeline, it is critical for operators to lay out the necessary foundation of technical knowledge for their G&G personnel. This allows personnel to be equipped with the right skills to carry out an accurate and quantifiable interpretation of their deepwater reservoir prediction and continuity.

Benefits of Attending

This programme is specially designed for G&G personnel involved in the exploration and development of deepwater projects. This advanced 2-day course will allow participants to understand the critical elements needed to evaluate their deepwater venture. The training modules include seismic and well log interpretation and characterization of deepwater depositional systems and topics on geohazards, reservoir continuity and connectivity.

Other areas to be covered include deepwater petroleum systems in mobile shale and salt provinces and deepwater reservoir characterisation.

The course will include case studies and dry hole analysis from deepwater developments and utilise subsurface examples and outcrop analogs from around the world to illustrate the challenges to G&G operations. These will include South Africa, Nigeria, Trinidad, Chile, Colombia, Gulf of Mexico, California, Texas and Atlantic Canada.

Trainer

Grant Wach

Professor of Petroleum Geoscience
Department of Earth Sciences
Dalhousie University, Canada

Dr. Grant Wach was appointed Professor of Petroleum Geoscience at Dalhousie University in 2002, and Director of Energy Dalhousie in 2003. A specialist in Reservoir Characterization and Stratigraphy, his interest in complex oil reservoirs began at Syncrude, in the oil sands of Alberta.

Prior to his recruitment to Dalhousie he was Geoscience Research Associate at Chevron Texaco, involved with exploration and commercialization of deepwater developments with business units around the globe.

He has led field schools and courses in deepwater exploration, development and reservoir characterization in several countries. At Texaco he was named “Outstanding Instructor” for his contributions to training.
