A Gathering of Great Minds at Asian Security Conference
Singapore - Inaugurating the International Conference on Asian Security at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore on February 27, 2007, General Russ Howard said "It took a catastrophic event to reorganise America's national security thinking and process."
General Howard, the Director of the Jebsen Centre for Counter Terrorism Studies at the Flecther School for Law and Diplomacy, added that "the contemporary wave of terrorism was markedly different from the past." He also said, "only a multi-dimensional and a strategic response could defeat it. It was difficult to quantify the measure of success and failure in counterterrorism" but added "The best we can do is to have a 97%-98% feeling of security."
Speaking on the threat of nuclear weapons in Asia-Pacific, Professor Lawrence Prabhakar, founding member Centre for Security Analysis, India, highlighted the increasing link between terrorism and Syria, Iran and North Korea. He also referred to the dangers of nuclear entrepreneurship of individuals and non-state actors.
The conference brought together some of the leading minds on terrorism and security. Among the speakers were Douglas McKenna from New Scotland Yard, Anders Nielsen from the Danish Defence Intelligence Service, Ustaz Mohamed bin Ali from the Religious Rehabilitation Group of Singapore, General Ofer Dekel from the Internal Security Agency of Israel, Jay Jhaveri from World Check and Dr. John Harrison and Rohaiza Binte Ahmed Asi from the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research in Singapore.
Dr. Rohan Gunaratna chaired the conference and Caroline Chang from K2B International Singapore organized the event.
